Question

HSA

I moved from Georgia to New York mid-year and will file part-year resident returns for both states. I made an $1,800 HSA contribution directly (not through payroll) before my move, which appears as my HSA deduction on Schedule 1, Line 13 of my federal return.

I’d like to allocate this full $1,800 deduction to Georgia (since it was paid while I was a GA resident) and enter $0 for New York on the state adjustment allocation screens.

Can you confirm:
    1.    Does TurboTax’s part-year interview let me manually edit the HSA deduction amount specifically on the New York allocation screen (separate from other Schedule 1 adjustments)?
    2.    Does the Georgia part-year interview have a similar editable field where I can confirm the full $1,800 is allocated there?
    3.    If either field is not directly editable in the guided interview, what is the recommended way to make this correction (e.g., forms mode)?
Thank you for your help.

I’ll let someone else handle the other questions, but if the entry on the form is not directly editable (which could very well be the case), then you’ll have to do an override in Forms Mode.

Overrides both obviate the ability to e-file and void the TurboTax accuracy guarantee but sometimes there is no way around an override.

I don’t want to pay TurboTax for a federal and two state returns only to then later find out that I need to override, and paper file and forgo TurboTax’s accuracy guarantee.

That’s really what I’m paying TurboTax for.

The question I’m asking is: How does TurboTax’s software handle this situation when there’s a non W2 HSA payment in a tax year where there are two partial year state returns. Does it allocate the payment across the two state returns, or does it take the HSA payment date and allocate it fully to the state I was living in at that time?

I’m not sure anyone knows for certain. However, while the allocation is not done automatically, I believe the entries would not require an override. Hopefully, someone can respond here and state otherwise if that’s not the case.

while I do not have access to either the GA or NY form, I personally wouldn;t worry about it until you have the software.

There is an adjustment line on the part-year GA form for Schedule 1 adjustments, so I would expect you can enter the $1800.

Not sure why you think there needs to be an adjustment on the NY form.

Personally, I would not fear the future (you don’t have the software yet, so you don’t know), just fear the reality (i.e. deal with it once you receive the software in January).

lastly, in Desktop, the absolute last option would be to override and paper file, but I suspect you won’t have to do that.  You are not the first person who had HSA contributions and part year returns that used Turbo Tax.

For the Online version, overriding is not permitted.

Im asking the question now because I want to know how TurboTax handles this situation so I can to make estimated payments, not wait until the software is available after the Q4 estimated payment date has passed.

Just for the record, the Q4 estimated payment is due on January 15, 2027
