I just e-filed my Federal Return.  I am trying to e-file my State and it is saying that I have to pay $24.99.  I have not used my free e-file yet for the State.  Why am I not able to e-file my one time free state return.

Using the desktop editions of Deluxe or higher purchased from TurboTax you receive on free state program Download included in the purchase price.  This does not include one free state tax return e-filing.  The state e-file fee is currently $24.99 for each state tax return e-filed (except for New York state).  This charge can be avoided by printing and mailing the state tax return.

Where on the box does it tell you that the state tax return is e-filed for free?

The current charge to e-file a state tax return is $24.99.

Where are you seeing a $39.95 fee?  Did you choose Audit Defense or the option to pay the state e-file fee from the federal tax refund for $39.99?

Using the desktop editions you get 5 free federal tax return e-files.  If using the Deluxe edition or higher there is One state program download included in the purchase price.
