FOR TURBOTAX AGENT:

I live in California. Can I take the standard deduction for my Federal return, but then itemize with my California state return?

Yes, you can.

There's no language in the California instructions that requires you to take the same type of deduction as on your federal return, unless you and a spouse are filing separately. In that case, you’re both required to use the same method.

Make sure that you enter your itemized deductions in the federal section of TurboTax, however, so that they import properly to your state return. You can opt to take the standard deduction for your federal return at the end of the interview.
