Question

Cannot file Kansas without Fed Filing

Trying to help a family member with his taxes.  It should be easy I thought!

He had no income other than SS, so the first thing TT told me was that he didn't need to file Federal... but then they took me through his Federal taxes "just to be sure"

Same result, owes nothing.....

So we went to the State of Kansas process.... again owes nothing.

When it came to electronic filing, TT said the Federal form was not eligible for e-filing... ????

....so I downloaded and printed it.... but the Kansas form cannot be e-filed without the Federal form

Now what?

Thanks,

Ryan

No state can e-file in TurboTax without e-filing the Federal return.  If you must mail in the Federal, you will need to mail in the state also.

Thank you @DanielV01 That makes sense!  Is there a way that I can force the fed e-file?

If with only the SS income you are receiving a "can't file Federal" diagnostic, add $1 of interest income.  This has been acceptable for those that have needed to file to claim the stimulus payments, and should work for this situation also.
