Alabama return ineligible for e-filing reason: Non-calendar & prior year returns are not eligible for e-file. Please tell me where to look for problems that would cause this. Return is for 2021,

If you are using the Home and Business Desktop version, switch to Forms Mode. On the left side, select AL Form 40. It should be blank for the beginning and ending dates of the return since those boxes are labelled for "other tax year". Delete those entries and you should be able to file.

I don't believe you could have this problem using the online version.
