Why aren’t my returns free? I had to upgrade last year due to using some retirement funds but I didn’t do that this year. How do I change this?

You can simply use the "clear and start over" feature in the program.  You are prompt to use the non-free version because that's the version you used last year.  If you do not have the retirement fund this year, you can downgrade the version by following the steps below.  Please note that, by doing so, it erases the current entries if there are any, but will keep the previous information from last year including your personal info, the income categories and the different schedules you have filed.

Follow the prompts and the program will revisit those areas for clarification and assist you to select the right (free) version for your new tax return if your situation applies.

  • Sign in to your account, select Pick up where you left off
  • To your left, select Tools, click on the drop-down menu
  • Select Clear and Start Over
