It depends on a number of factors, including -- most likely in your case, since you're retired -- your age.

That depends upon said couple's total income, whether the earned income  is from wages (W-2) or self-employment (1099-NEC), and a variety of other factors.  Also note that state filing requirements may be different than Federal.
