Version recommendation

I'm trying to determine which version to use this year.  I retired in May 2022 so will still have a W2.  I'll also have 1099G for pension and 401(k) rollover to an IRA, 1099R and some stock sell.  Also, download version or desktop?

If you have a full PC or Mac that meets the system requirements for the CD/download, then get the Deluxe CD/download.   Every version of the desktop (aka CD/download) has all of the forms and schedules.   You just get more help in certain areas by upgrading to more expensive versions.  Deluxe can handle your W-2 income, retirement income, etc.   You will get a 1099R for your pension by the way not a 1099G.

To enter your retirement income, Go to  Federal> Wages and Income>Retirement Plans and Social Security>IRA  401 k) Pension Plan Withdrawals to enter your 1099R.

Use the Download ... Deluxe if you need to file a state return or Basic if you don't.

If you use the Online version you will need the Premier.

When you use desktop software, there is an additional fee to e-file a state return.  You can avoid that fee if you print, sign and mail the state return.  The state e-file fee is $19.99 and increases in March.

Here is a summary of the differences between desktop and online.  Based on the forms you have, you need Deluxe or Premier in the desktop version, and Premier in the online version.

Desktop	Online
Your file is on your computer only.  You are responsible for backup and security.	Your file is in the cloud.  You can work on your tax return from any web-connected computer, and Turbotax handles backups and security.
You can prepare an unlimited number of returns from one installed program, and e-file the first 5.	Each tax return requires a separate online account with a different user name and password, and each online account will require a separate filing fee.
Deluxe, Premier and Home&Business version all contain the same forms.  More expensive versions contain extra help and support for complex situations.  You can prepare advanced returns with the cheaper Deluxe version if you don't need the extra support.	You must upgrade to the more expensive Premier or Self-Employed version if you have a tax situation that requires those features.
Can directly view and edit all forms and worksheets in Forms mode.  (Note that direct entry on forms may void the accuracy guarantee and/or block e-filing.)	Can't view any forms until after paying the fee, can't directly edit forms, must use interview mode.
