Substitute 1099-R Form

My wife is a foreign national who receives income in the USA so she receives form 1042-S. Previously when entering income information into Turbo Tax I entered details on form 1099-R and I was later able to prepare a substitute 1099-R after indicating a missing form. This step is missing in 2026 TT. How do I prepare substitute 1099_R (form 4852)

In either TurboTax Desktop or Online, enter the information as if it were reported on an IRS form 1099-B.

Under Retirement Plans and Social Security, click to the right of IRA 401(k) Pension Plan Withdrawal (1099-R).

At the screen Do any of these situations apply to you?, select I need to file a substitute 1099-R.

Thanks for your response. When I click to the right of IRA 401(k) Pension Plan Withdrawal (1099-R) (Learn More) the a window opens containing information but no mension of substitute 1099-R. If I click to the far right (Update) I see a summary of the information I have entered for that section and an option to add a 1099-R but not a substitute 1099-R. If I click the 1099-R link I am able to add the information received in the 1042-S and the information is saved as a 1099-R. At no time is there a link to file a substitute 1099-R. In prior years this option was available but not in the 2026 version, at least as far as I can see. I am running Home and Business Desktop. Any other suggestions?

You would enter the 1099-R information as if you received an IRS form 1099-R.  At the screen Do any of these situations apply to you? select I need to file a substitute 1099-R

Follow these steps to report the transaction:

    • Across the top of the screen, click on Personal.
    • Across the top of the screen, click on Personal income.
    • Click on I'll choose what I work on.
    • Scroll down to Retirement Plans Social Security.
    • Click Start / Update to the right of IRA 401K Pension Plan Withdrawals.
    • At the screen Let Us Enter Your Bank and Brokerage Tax Documents, select Skip Import.
    • At the screen Who gave you a 1099-R, select Financial institution or other provider (1099-R).  Click Continue.
    • At the screen Enter your 1099-R providers info, enter information.  Click Continue.
    • At the screen Enter your 1099-R details, enter Box 1, Box 2a and Box 7 information at a minimum.
    • At the screen Is the IRA/SEP/SIMPLE box on this 1099-R checked?, select No.  Click Continue.
    • At the screen Where is your distribution from?, select Other distribution.  Click Continue.
    • At the screen What kind of retirement plan do you have?, select information.  Click Continue.
    • At the screen Do any of these situation apply to you?, select I need to file a substitute 1099-R.

You may not be able to electronically file and you may have to mail to the IRS supporting documentation.
