Medicare Deduction from Soc Sec

Thanks. See my reply to DoninGa. 🙂

Medicare Deduction from Soc Sec

in Box 5 of the SSA-1099  - this is your total benefits paid to you from Social Security for that tax year.  Medicare premiums are NOT deducted from this amount.

Medicare Deduction from Soc Sec

Thanks. I understand. My total benefit (in Box 5) is taxable at whatever tax rate applies to me. In my case, I will pay tax on 85% of that entire benefit in Box 5.

My medicare payments are only 10% of my full benefit, so indirectly, when it all shakes out, I will not be paying taxes on the portion that is withheld for my medicare premiums. I realize this non-taxable amount (15% of the entire benefit) will not show up on the SSA-1099 as a separate item.
