How can I later increase the amount I should have paid with my extension?

I have mailed a form 4869 application for extension to file my 2019 Federal taxes to October 15, 2020. I did not make a payment with the extension application because taxes are deducted from my pension. An RMD was taken automatically in 2019, which I received. But I just learned that the tax was not deducted as expected.

Should I send an estimate of the extra amount that I will owe in additional taxes now, as I was supposed to with the 4869 application, or should I wait until I file the return? (That will be in about 2 weeks using Turbotax Deluxe.)

Minnesota does not require a separate extension application, so I assume I don't have to pay MN in advance of the final payment.

If you are filing soon you can wait and pay when you file ... do so ASAP.

All tax payments were due in full  on July 15.

You are now accruing late penalties and interest.

That should tell you something.

How can I later increase the amount I should have paid with my extension?

Thanks,

I just paid up online at IRS Direct Pay at https://www.irs.gov/payments/direct-pay

Had the payment taken directly from my checking account.

Your Form 1040 will still show that tax due but you don't have to send any money with it since you already paid.

Thanks.

You can pay at any time using direct debit from your checking account, at IRS.gov.  Click the "Make a payment" button, and select "Tax Payment".  Make sure you get the year right.

When you finally do your tax return, you can include this payment on Schedule 3.   (The IRS instructions are a little fuzzy on where to enter payments not made with the request for extension; either line 10 or line 13d should be fine, but just make sure it gets on there somewhere).
