QCD with inherited IRA (box 7 is 4 )

I am using Turbo Tax Online.  I am 73 and I have an inherited IRA from my mother who died in 2024.  I donated the RMD directly to charity and have proper receipt from the charity.  In 2024 I also donated the first RMD directly to charity and it was correctly reported on line 4b with QCD notation.  We took the standard deduction.

This year the amount is again correctly reported on line 4a and 4b with 4c QCD box checked.  However this year we have enough with taxes and other contributions to itemize.  On Sch A the amount of the QCD is being added by TurboTax to my total contributions.

I can reduce my total contributions by the QCD amount to make it correct but would like to know why TurboTax Online is doing this?

I had entered 0 in the taxable amount, rather than the taxable amount, so it assumed it was not taxable to begin with so no need to consider it a QCD - thus adding it to the Sch A Charitable amount.  Thank you for suggesting to look at the TurboTax worksheets!

Review the 1099-R section to make sure you've indicated that the distribution is a QCD.  Even if you itemize, the QCD shouldn't be shown on Sch A.  Also, review your tax return to ensure that the QCD is being treated correctly and if not, go and review the 1099R section.

Here's a link on how to preview your tax return before e-filing:

It appears that you have been mistakenly entering as charitable deductions under Deductions & Credits amounts that you have also reported as being QCDs.  You must enter the contribution only as one or the other, not both.  Go back through Deductions & Credits and remove the entry that you made there.

In past years this entry error did not matter because the total on Schedule A was not enough for you to itemize instead of using the standard deduction.  However, in 2025 when you have enough on Schedule A to itemize, mistakenly entering the QCD under Deductions & Credits is causing the your contribution to be double-counted.

Thank you both your response.  The QCD is showing as non taxable on Line 4b and QCD box is checked.  That is not my concern.

The QCD amount is $1931.  In the donations section I have entered $9211 on one line to Misc Charities.  There is a $5 passthrough donation from a K-1.  On the printed Sch A Line 11 the amount is $11147, the sum of those 3 numbers.

I tried changing the Box 7 Code to Y but had the same result.

I don't think that it is possible for the $1,931 to be included on Schedule A line 11 unless it was included in an entry made directly on one of TurboTax's Charitable Organization Worksheets.  Check those worksheets, and TurboTax's Cash Contributions Worksheet and Charitable Contributions Summary.

You could also try temporarily changing the QCD amount to zero on this 1099-R in TurboTax.  I would be really surprised if doing so changes the amount on Schedule A line 11 because I don't think that the QCD entry indicated by the 1099-R entry is carrying over to Schedule A.

I had entered 0 in the taxable amount, rather than the taxable amount, so it assumed it was not taxable to begin with so no need to consider it a QCD - thus adding it to the Sch A Charitable amount.  Thank you for suggesting to look at the TurboTax worksheets!

Box 2a must have the same amount as box 1.  Entering a zero in box 2a could cause problems.  What I suggested was changing the amount that you had entered as the amount that was transferred to charity to see what effect it had on Schedule A line 11, if any.
