Partial RMD taken before death

I am using TurboTax Deluxe for a family member's 2024 return. He died in 2024 having taken some but not all of his RMD. I have checked the box indicating that he died, and I have entered the date. The program shows acknowledgement of this on the screen. The beneficiary opened an inherited RMD, received the remaining amount, and withheld taxes on it. The deceased's 1099 shows the amount taken, and the remaining amount (that was calculated at the start of 2024) will appear on the beneficiary's 1099 (inherited RMD). Do I enter the amount taken by the deceased as his total RMD for 2024 on his return? If I enter the entire RMD amount (his + what ended up going to the beneficiary) on the deceased's return, TurboTax treats the amount he took as insufficient and indicates a large penalty will occur. Not sure how to proceed.

I think I just found the answer to my own question: https://ttlc.intuit.com/community/retirement/discussion/reporting-the-transfer-of-a-rmd-requirement-...

Partial RMD taken before death

"Do I enter the amount taken by the deceased as his total RMD for 2024 on his return?"

Yes.  The remainder of his RMD was no longer his responsibility, so do not include the remainder when asked the amount that he was required to take.  That responsibility transferred to his beneficiaries upon his death and only the remainder became the responsibility of the beneficiaries.
