Military Pension or Survivors benefit

I received a 1099-R  from the Office of Personal Management (OPM) for work in the US Army as a civilian.  Does this pension count as a military pension?  To be clear, I worked for the Army but I was not in military service.

No.  This is not a military pension.

No.  You may be qualified for U.S. Military Retirement if you:

  • Served on active duty in the U.S Army, Navy, Air Force, Space Force or Marine Corps for a period of 20 years or more; or
  • Retired medically from the U.S. Army, Navy, Air Force, Space Force or Marine Corps.

The following types of service count towards your qualifying years of service:

  1. Active service
  2. Active duty for training
  3. Active duty for special work
  4. Temporary tour of active duty
  5. Full-time National Guard duty
  6. Active Guard/Reserve time

Qualified Reserve Component (U.S. Army Reserve and Army National Guard) personnel begin to draw retired pay when they have accrued 20 qualifying years of service time and reached age 60.
