Joseph is 71 years old and Retired, Barbara is 64 years old and still working are we getting Credit of the Elderly

How can I see if we are getting credit for an elderly person

There is a credit for the Elderly and Disabled which is so small that very few people benefit from it—-it has not been updated/increased by Congress for decades.

• If your disability income is taxable, you may qualify for the federal Credit for the Elderly and Disabled. To qualify, you must be permanently and totally disabled and meet certain income requirements.

You get an extra amount on your standard deduction for Joseph.   See Line 12 of Form 1040 to verify your standard deduction.  

For single taxpayers and married individuals filing separately, the Standard Deduction is $13,850 in 2023. 

For married couples filing jointly is $27,700, and  

For heads of households, the Standard Deduction is $20,800

  

If you're at least 65 years old or blind, you can claim an additional deduction in 2023 of:

• $1,850 for single or Head of Household
• $1,500 for married or Qualified Surviving Spouse.
