Is there a method to reduce the tax burden for one year if one withdraws a large amount from their defferred tax annuity program?

This withdrawal was used to purchase a home.

Nope.  Just the usual tax deductions (charities, IRA, etc.)

There used to be a thing called income averaging but its long gone.

Sorry, there is not way to reduce the tax liability. The withdrawal is fully taxable as ordinary income in the year withdrawn.
