Yes.  First be sure in the "My Info" section you have indicated you are "Military" and "Former/Retired" military in the follow on question.

Next in the "Income" tab, revisit the "Retirement" section and "Edit" the "IRA, Pension...1099R" topic.  "Edit" the 1099R for your military retirement.  Verify the box entries and then in the follow on page select the "Military retirement/disability" choice.  Next select "Non-qualified" for the type of plan and complete the topic interview.

You can now go back to the Kansas state interview and verify the pension has been excluded.  "Edit" the "Income" section and continue to the page "Here's the income KS handles differently" and you should see the pension exemption at the top of the page.

Yes.  Your military retirement pay is nontaxable income for KS state taxes.  Here are the steps in desktop versions to exclude the income from KS taxes.

  2. Select "You and your family"
  3. Edit your personal info
  4. Indicate you are "Military" and "Former/Retired" military in the follow on question.
  5. Continue through
  6. Select "Federal Taxes" at the top of the page (or use the "Search" tab at the top right and type "1099R" and use the "Jump to" link presented in the search results)
  7. "Wages and Income"
  8. "I'll choose what I work on"
  9. Scroll to "Retirements..." section
  10. Start/Update the IRA, 401K, Pension...(1099R) topic
  11. Yes, I'll type it myself (if first item)
  12. "Add a 1099R" (if second or subsequent)
  13. or Edit the 1099R if you have already entered the form
  14. Enter the form information
  15. No, the IRA box is blank
  16. No, this is not Public Safety
  17. You should arrive at page titled "Where is this distribution from?"
  18. Select Military Retirement or Disability
