Can I deduct medical insurance costs that are withheld from my 1099 R (pension)?

Yes, you can deduct unreimbursed medical insurance expenses paid out of pocket if paid after tax (not pre tax) if you itemize and the total expenses for you, your spouse, and your dependents exceed 7.5 % of your adjusted gross income. The deduction is limited to the expenses above and beyond this amount

To enter medical insuranceexpenses:

  • Type in medical expenses the search box, top right of your screen, then click the magnifying glass

  • Click the jump to medical expenses link in the search results

  • Follow to prompts and online instructions

See the How much did you spend on insurance premiums? page.

If you are not sure if your medical insurance is deducted after tax, contact your pension plan administrator.
