My wife and i are retired . we have no mortgage $7000 to $8000 in deductions (this includes property taxes). I believe we should only do the short form, am I correct?

If the total amount you can itemize is 8,000 and you are filing Married Filing Jointly, the standard deduction would be more advantageous.

Taking the standard deduction can be done using the short form 1040A.
