Here are the steps to enter the 1099-R in TurboTax Online:

  • Sign into your Online account
  • Click the orange button that says "Take me to my return."
  • Go to Federal Taxes
  • Next click on Wages and Income
  • Scroll down to Retirement Plans and Social Security
  • Next click on 401(k), IRA, Pension Plan Withdrawals (1099-R), click on the start of update button

As an alternative you can also use our jump to feature in the FAQ instructions below.

How do i file a 1099-R

I am retired and do not do a w2, but I have a 1099-R, that I think I have to pay taxes on

How do i file a 1099-R

Yes it is usually taxable.  Do they take taxes out of it?

The easiest way to get to the 1099-R entry screen is to simply search for 1099-R (upper- or lower-case, with or without the dash) in your TurboTax program and then click the "Jump to" link in the search results.

Enter a 1099R under

Federal Taxes on the left side

Wages & Income at the top

Then scroll way down to Retirement Plans and Social Security,

Then IRA, 401(k), Pension Plans (1099R) - click Start or Revisit

If you are filing a Joint return be sure to pick which person it is for.
