**Tax Year 2018 and Earlier**Where to enter spousal support

FOR TAX YEAR 2018 OR PRIOR

Here is how to enter alimony (spousal support) you received in TurboTax:

  • Login to your TurboTax account
  • Click Take me to my return.
  • In the search box, type "alimony received"
  • Click the "Jump to alimony received" link in the search results
  • Answer Yes to Did you receive alimony or spousal support? and follow the onscreen instructions.

If you are paying alimony, you can take a tax deduction for the payments, even if you don't itemize your deductions. Keep in mind, though, that the IRS won't consider the payments to be true alimony unless they are made in cash (including checks or money orders) and spelled out in the divorce agreement.

Here is how to enter alimony (spousal support) you paid in TurboTax:

  • Login to your TurboTax account
  • Click Take me to my return.
  • In the search box, type "alimony paid"
  • Click the "Jump to alimony paid" link in the search results
  • Answer Yes to Did you receive alimony or spousal support? and follow the onscreen instructions.
