Got 2021 RMD after 1 Apr 2022. 1099R has both 2021 and 2022 RMD as one lump sum. Must I file a 5329?

My funds computer said the RMD had been distributed. Asked for 2021 RMD in June, and got it in October after computer problem fixed.

When entering your 1099-R in your 2021 return, did you indicate that you did not take an RMD?  If so, your penalty would have been assessed on Form 5329 in your 2021 return.

If not, and your failure to take the RMD in 2021 was not your fault, you don't need to pay a penalty.

When entering your 1099-R in TurboTax for 2022, indicate that 'all of this distribution was RMD' and no penalty will be assessed.

Since plan administrators are responsible for distributing RMD correctly, you can assume that your 1099-R has the correct amounts included each year.

you're saying you missed the April 1 2022 deadline for first RMD.

you enter the missed amount on 2022 Form 5329 and request the waiver of the penalty.

IRS will grant the waiver.

your mutual fund's error caused you to miss the deadline?

include that fact on your explanation statement requesting the waiver.

did you figure out how to do this?

because you do have a 1099-R (missed partially) you can work your way over to the Form 5239 for shortfall.

Without a 1099-R (missed entirely) TurboTax makes this difficult.

you have to tell TurboTax you missed part of the RMD even if you met the requirement later after April 1.
