Entering RMDs for Multiple Accounts

I have three Traditional IRA accounts but take the TOTAL RMD out of only one. There is no distribution from the other two. But TT only asks for the RMD for the ONE account. Do I have to fake the number for that account and enter the total for all three where it asks for one. Am I missing something?

No. You should not fake numbers. TurboTax treats each  Form 1099-R separately. If there were no distributions from two of your accounts, there would be no RMD questions for those.

However, since you take your total RMD from the one account, you can indicate your total RMD was satisfied from this distribution by doing the following:

  1. Return to your 1099-R entry by clicking Review to the right of IRA, 401(k), Pension Plan Withdrawals (1099-R) in the Federal Wages & Income
  2. Click on the pencil to the right of the 1099-R
  3. Click Continue through the entries you've made
  4. "Let's get more information about your Required Minimum Distribution (RMD), enter the amount of your distribution as your RMD that was due by December 31, 2025Continue
  5. On the next screen, "How much of this distribution applied to your December 31, 2025 RMD?", select "The entire distribution applied...", Continue
  6. When you reach, "Review your 1099-R summaryContinue (not the pencil)
  7. When you reach, "Let's go over any required minimum distributions (RMD), Continue (not the pencil)

This does not work.

In 1. I do not get the word "Review", I get the word "Update"

However, after clicking on Update, I can do steps 2,3,4,5,6.  However, I do not get Review and more info about my RMD question mentioned in Step 7. Note that part of my RMD goes to charity as a QCD. I get no option for entering RMDs from other accounts - I only get the question for the RMD required for the one account where I took the total distribution. Does the QCD entry works but then it just goes to the screen that says I get a tax break not does not allow any more entries.

Note also, that the answer to the question about did this Entire Distribution go towards the RMD is not right. The distribution from this account covered more than the ENTIRE RMD from all accounts but the distribution was larger than the TOTAL RMD from all accounts. Some of the distribution was excess cash, some went to a rollover to a ROTH. Of course, some went to a QCD but that counts toward the RMD.

I do not get an option to enter RMDs for accounts where I had no distribution.

If you indicate in TurboTax that 'entire distribution was RMD' you'll be able to continue on and indicate if any amounts were rolled over or went to QCD in the following questions.

You're correct that you can't enter RMD's for accounts without a 1099-R, but if you know that all your RMD was taken, this is the easiest way to report.  Neither the IRS nor TurboTax knows what your RMD's should be.  They expect that your Plan Administrator makes sure that RMD's are taken annually.

Entering RMDs for Multiple Accounts

Hi,

Thanks for the input. TurboTax has certainly made inputting information on Trad IRD distribution(s) extremely confusing, if not actually wrong, when you have multiple Trad IRA accounts, QCDs, Roth Rollovers, and an AT Basis. TT seems to assume that everyone has only one Trad IRA account, they ask for information only one account and you are forced to answer the poorly worded questions incorrectly just to get the numbers to come out right. The never ask what the EOY25 total balance of all the accounts is (actually they ask but will not allow input) so I do not understand how TT can calculate the owed tax on the distribution since some of it not taxable and that depends on the basis and the value of the account(s). Please correct me if I am missing something.

I have tried answering "yes" to the question "was this distribution RMD" (yes is the wrong answer, or the question could be worded better. It did allow a follow to input any QCD money, but did not ask for the amount of a Roth rollover (this may not matter as far as tax liability goes, but might trigger any ofthe 5-year rules.

Question still remains, does TT need the total value of all my Trad IRAs to go along with the basis in one of the accounts to calculate the owed tax. If required, there does not seem to be any way to input the value.
