Do you have to claim survivor benefits? I was told no from several sources so I haven't. Not sure what to do now...

If you receive a tax reporting document, such as a 1099-R then yes, you have to report that income. Military survivor benefits are reportable and taxable. So if that's what you've been receiving in 2017, you will get a 1099-R for that if you haven't received one already.

Yes social security from their dad passing away.

You said "their dad".  Social Security will send out tax forms by the end of January.  Those for the kids are only reportable if they have other income that requires a tax return.  Never goes on yours.  Social Security surviving spouse benefits to you do have to be reported on your return and will be partially taxed,
