Do I need to amend my 2016 tax return if I contribute to a traditional ira after filing and convert it to a backdoor Roth? Is there a special tax form I need to fill out?

My income is low enough where I qualify for full deduction of my traditional Ira contribution, however I've already filed my 2016 tax return.

If you now make a traditional IRA contribution for 2016, you must amend your already filed 2016 tax return, either to add a deduction for the contribution or to add Form 8606 to report a nondeductible contribution.

Any Roth conversion you do in 2017 will be reportable on your 2017 tax return and has no effect on your 2016 tax return.
