I am 100% service connected disabled veteran.  Federal taxes were withheld from my army pension for part of year 2022 prior to my being determined exempt from taxes.  How do I request a refund for the collected taxes or what form do I use to claim the collected taxes when I file my return for 2023? I live in the state of Texas.

You will have to file a normal tax return and report zero income and the withholding which will be your refund amount.

Thank you for responding.  I do have other income (Social Security, Teacher Retirement etc.) so do I not include the income shown on my Army Retirement 1099R as part of my gross income?  Will IRS know that I am exempt.  Are there any publications or articles that would further explain this?  When it comes to the IRS I am extremely nervous.

    Thanks

You should enter the 1099-R as you receive showing the income and withholding.  If you then add as Miscellaneous Income with a description of something like Military Disability-exempt income with the amount negative, the IRS will see the income with the description.  @LesiaC
