Confusing questions to populate Form 8606 - question about Roth contributions

I think Turbotax 2025 (desktop) is asking me questions to populate the Form 8606:

Roth IRAS

What were your Roth IRA contributions prior to 2025?

When I click on "Learn More" the explanation (which I cannot copy and paste from for some reason) goes into the definition of Roth conversions. It seems to be that if Turbotax is asking for Roth IRA contributions, then that needs to be defined, not Roth IRA conversions

According to the IRS, a Roth contribution is an after-tax contribution made to a Roth IRA.

I have never made a Roth contribution. I have done several Roth conversions starting in 2019.

So do I answer "0" to the question since I never have made Roth contributions?

Confusing questions to populate Form 8606 - question about Roth contributions

If you took a distribution from a Roth IRA, you may need to file the 8606 so you would want to enter your contributions.  This would only need to be reported of you had a nonqualified distribution.

Generally, a qualified distribution is any distribution from your Roth IRA that meets the following requirements.

  • It is made after the 5-year period beginning with the first year for which a contribution was made to a Roth IRA (including a conversion or a rollover from a qualified retirement plan) set up for your benefit.

The distribution is made:

  • On or after the date you reach age 59½,
  • After your death,
  • Due to your disability, or
  • For qualified first-time homebuyer expenses.

See Qualified distribution.
