The state abbreviation for Puerto Rico is PR.
If you are entering Puerto Rico in the PERSONAL INFORMATION section, Puerto Rico is considered a U.S. Territory. In TurboTax, for the state, enter Foreign or US Possession, then you will be able to select Puerto Rico from the drop down box.
Your abbreviated state should be listed in box 13a and your state payer's ID should be listed in box 13b.
If you are unable to update box 13a in TurboTax please do the following.
1) Delete the form 1099-R that's causing the smart check error.
To delete a form in TurboTax click the federal tab, click my account in the mid-upper portions of the screen, select tools, and choose delete forms. Locate the 1099-R that you are having the issue with and click delete.
2) Manually re-enter the 1099-R in TurboTax.
On the "Let Us Enter Your 1099-R" page, select "I'll type it myself." In the State Information section of the "Enter Your 1099-R" page type your abbreviated state in box "13-State ID" and in your state's payer ID in box "13-Payer's state no."
You should no longer receive the 1099-R error in smart check.
I haven't solved the issue yet. Puerto RIco is not shown in the drop down list.
It depends. Give us some background information. Are you a US citizen living in Puerto Rico and is the 1099R issued from a US based employer or Puerto Rico based employer. Also, how much was the tax paid to Puerto Rico if this is all US based?
