Uncollectable judgement

I won a lawsuit against a roofing company for a bad roof job. The settlement was 150k with 8% over 10 years. They claimed bankruptcy and I hired a bankruptcy lawyer. He just told me that we wouldn’t receive anything and they I could claim it on taxes. Is he right and how would I go about it? North Carolina
