Stimulus Check with a Negative AGI

Thanks.  ok I did that but i did not receive a refund or made a payment.  It is a required field.  I put in 0 and it did not work.

Stimulus Check with a Negative AGI

Update: I have solved the problem.

When I entered my AGI, I removed the minus sign. so, the AGI was 10.

The next part was whether or not I received a refund or owed money. The key here is to enter the actual money owed or reserved as listed on your 1040. Since I was claiming 2018, I had to check line 20a. I am not sure of the line you have to check if you owed money, but there is a question mark just about the space with the info. In my case, line 20a was 0.

To summarise:

-AGI 10 (remove minus)

-Refund amount (line 20a) 0

-Entered in banking information

The transaction was successful!

I hope this helps. It worked for me, so I would suggest clicking on the question marks as they will guide you.

Hope this helps.

Stimulus Check with a Negative AGI

Corrheag - Thanks! I went in this morning and did not put a minus sign.

Next was - did I receive a refund or owe?

I did click had a refund. The trick is - I did not get refund back. I am rolling it over to pay 2019 taxes.

So instead of putting 2000 - which was on line 20a, I put 0 since I really did not receive a refund.

That worked!

Getting check electronically!

So happy you figured it also! Thanks for the message. Hopefully this will help other people as well!

Stimulus Check with a Negative AGI

I had a negative AGI and a large refund in 2018. Haven't filed in 2019 yet.

AGI: I tried everything.

Refund: whole number.

Its always says Technical Difficulties. Try again later.

So I feel it is accurate. Anybody else get this?

Stimulus Check with a Negative AGI

Same issue here and have tried every combination wo any luck.  There was an article out stating that it is a know bug but unknown if they were going to address it. It will also effect you if you try to file electronically and it asks for the same info.

Stimulus Check with a Negative AGI

You are not explaining what it is you are putting in for numbers.

If you go into check my status for Stimulus check. With every question there is a little ?  - Click on it and it will tell where to look on your tax forms (2018 or 2019) to fill in that answer.

-AGI - (Click on ? to get what answer you should put)

-Did you owe or get a refund?

-Amount owed or amount refunded

I did not put a negative in front of my AGI - I just put the number

I was owed a refund

I did not get my refund back - I am leaving with IRS and using that refund to pay my 2019 taxes. So instead of putting amount (from my 2018 taxes line 20a - which was $2000)  I put $0, because that was the amount I was refunded.

I do know that the ? they have by each box will help each individual with filling out that specific question.

Click on the ? it will tell to put 0 here or to look at a certain line on your 2018 or 2019 taxes.

Good Luck

IRS explains how to file returns to receive economic impact payments

By Sally P. Schreiber, J.D.

April 21, 2020

The IRS announced two procedures for taxpayers who normally do not file a federal tax return to file returns to receive the economic impact payments (Rev. Proc. 2020-28). Under the Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security (CARES) Act, P.L. 116-136, eligible individuals will receive an economic impact payment of up to $1,200 for individuals or $2,400 for married couples. Parents also receive $500 for each qualifying child.

The first procedure is a simplified procedure for eligible individuals who voluntarily wish to file a federal income tax return only to receive allowed economic impact payments. These eligible individuals are encouraged to use the “Non-Filers: Enter Payment Info Here” tool so they can receive their payment much quicker than if they filed a paper return. The instructions for the simplified filing method contain line-by-line guidance and require, if applicable, the individual to provide information about any dependents who may qualify for the additional $500 payment. The procedures also permit taxpayers to file a paper 2019 return to claim the payments if they wish, instead of electronically.

( I THINK THIS IS THE ANSWER>>> I ALSO HAVE NEGETABLE !!!

The second procedure is for taxpayers who have zero adjusted gross income (AGI) and want to file electronically and who use tax return preparation software or otherwise need to provide more detail in filing state or local tax returns than that allowed by the simplified procedure. A “zero AGI filer” has zero AGI for the 2019 tax year (that is, the eligible individual has zero AGI for 2019 reportable on line 8b of Form 1040, U.S. Individual Income Tax Return, or Form 1040-SR, U.S. Tax Return for Seniors) and has not yet filed a 2019 federal income tax return. In addition, a zero AGI filer must have a Social Security number (SSN) that is valid for employment or file a joint return with an individual who has an SSN that is valid for employment if one of the joint return filers was a member of the U.S. armed forces at any time during 2019. Despite having no AGI, a zero AGI filer for these purposes must enter $1 amounts for taxable interest, total income, and AGI on the return.

These alternative returns must be filed by Oct. 15, 2020, so the IRS can make the payments before the end of 2020 as required under the CARES Act. Both procedures require signatures under penalties of perjury.
