Question

savings bond

I cashed in a EE paper savings bond in April. Where do I go to see how much interest it accrued so I have an idea of how much I will have to pay in taxes?

To check the value and interest accrued on a paper Series EE savings bond, use the official Savings Bond Calculator provided by the U.S. Department of the Treasury.

    How to Calculate Your Interest

    • Gather bond details: Find the series (Series EE), denomination ($50, $100, etc.), issue date (month and year printed on the bond), and the optional serial number.
    • Use the tool: Enter these details into the Savings Bond Calculator and set the date for the month you cashed the bond (April).
    • Review the figures: The calculator will display the total redemption value, original purchase price, and total interest earned. The total interest earned is the taxable amount you must report.

    Tax & Document Details

    • Form 1099-INT: If you cashed the paper bond at a bank or credit union, they will issue you a Form 1099-INT showing the interest income. (Financial institutions typically mail or make these forms available by January 31 of the year following the redemption year).
    • Federal vs. State Taxes: EE bond interest is subject to federal income tax, but it is exempt from state and local income taxes
