Longterm Capital gains stacking

I understand that Longterm Capital gains stack on top of income, then you apply the Capital gains tax schedule, but does it stack on top of your taxable income or your AGI?

My situation:

I am retired; Wife works - taxable income 68K

We have about 2k in 1099-int.

We are both 62

We have $150,000 in Longterm Cap. gains this year.

85K in carry over Cap. gain losses.

I am thinking the Longterm Cap. gains are reduced to 65K (150K-85K) and income is reduced by 32K(standard deduction).

I want to estimate my Cap gains tax for 2026.

Thanks,

Ed

Your capital losses reduce your capital gains first, and your standard deduction reduces your ordinary income.

Because the capital gains rate schedule relies entirely on your total taxable income, your ordinary income effectively sets the baseline floor where your capital gains begin stacking.

    Here’s a 2026 calculator (estimated).
