Military state spose tax exemption

My wife worked in NY last year and on her W-2 block 17 shows a state income tax. Since we are both residents of a state that doesn't require state tax, should we be getting that back? We have also paid this tax for the last several years being stationed here because we didn't know any better.

Yes, you will have to file a nonresident tax return with zero state income and then the withholding will be refunded.  Which state was it?  I can check it- some states will refund without the full tax form.

Oh, New York, they are pretty strict.  I looked it up and they require tax return.  I have put the link below if you want to try to fill it out directly with New York since there is not much for Turbo Tax to calculate.

Also, if you are still in New York and have not done so, apply to change state withholding.
