Your home of record is the state recorded by the military as your home when you were enlisted, appointed, commissioned, inducted, or ordered in a tour of active duty.

From a tax standpoint, your State of Legal Residency (SLR) is considered your “domicile” or “resident” state as long as you are on active duty. Even if you are stationed in another state, you’re still considered a resident of your SLR.

In TurboTax, under My Info, you should report both states as your Resident state.  On December 31, 2019 your state of residence was Massachusetts.  Under I lived in another state in 2019, report Texas.

You will be reporting a part-year tax return for Massachusetts since Texas will not require a state tax return to be filed.

You prepare your state tax return by following these steps.

  • Down the left side of the screen, click on State.
  • Across the top of the screen click on Your state returns.
  • At the screen Status of your state returns, select Add another state.
