How do I get my 6-digit IP PIN?

The IRS typically issues an IP PIN in known cases of identity fraud, but it’s still possible to opt into the IP PIN program even if you’re not a victim. If you, or anyone on your return (including dependents) was assigned an IP PIN, you must include the 6-digit number for the current tax year in your return for it to be accepted by the IRS.

The IRS may not always be proactive when issuing IP PINs. If your Social Security number was exposed as part of a security breach, but the IRS hasn’t sent you a letter to notify you to request an IP PIN, you should acquire an IP PIN as soon as possible.

What’s the difference between an IP PIN and a Self-Select PIN?

An IP PIN and a Self-Select PIN are two different things.

  • An IP PIN is a 6-digit number that the IRS gives taxpayers who were victims of tax-related identity theft. Someone can also self-register to receive an IP PIN.

  • A Self-Select PIN is a random 5-digit number that you enter as your electronic signature when e-filing your return.

How do I get an IP PIN if I didn’t get a letter?

If you know you need an IP PIN to file your taxes and you lost your CP01A letter (or never received it), you can:

  • Get your IP PIN online at the IRS's Get an IP PIN site, or

  • Call the IRS at 1-800-908-4490 to have your IP PIN mailed to you (this can take up to 21 days)

Can TurboTax issue IP PINs?

We can't issue IP PINs and you won't find them on your tax paperwork. You can only get IP PINs from the IRS.

How do I enter my IP PIN into TurboTax?

We'll ask if you want to enter this year’s IP PIN when you reach Step 3 of Finish & File, but you can also follow the below instructions if you prefer to enter it sooner.

    • TurboTax Online/Mobile: Go to the IP PIN screenunder Other tax situations in the Federal section.

    • TurboTax Desktop:

      • Go to Federal Taxes.

      • Go to Other Tax Situations.

      • Under Other Return Info, select Start or Update next to Identity protection PIN.

  • On the Identity Protection PIN screen, answer Yes. Select Add and enter your IP PIN in the space provided.

    • If you need to remove the IP PIN, select the trash icon.

  • Select Continue, then select Done.
