Can I be reimbursed for 1st and last months rent for college expenses in 2017 from the 529 account even though the last months rent is for 2018?

We paid first and last months rent in 2017 for our son's off campus housing. We are wondering if we can claim that reimbursement from our 529 account in 2017 along with expenses for Sept, Oct, Nov. Dec. rent.  Also can we get reimbursed for the summer months for rent even though he won't be attending classes, but has to sign a 12 month lease?

Yes,since the last month rent was required and was paid, it can be reimbursed by the 529 plan. The summer months cannot, since it was not while enrolled.

But, the question may be academic, as  your housing expense must not exceed the room allowance, included in the cost of attendance, as determined by the college..
