Tax Year Prior to 2020: I live in my rental property. Why is TurboTax is deducting my property tax twice? I don't see a way to change it with out entering a number that is not on my 1098

deleted for double post

Tax Year Prior to 2020: I live in my rental property. Why is TurboTax is deducting my property tax twice? I don't see a way to change it with out entering a number that is not on my 1098

My posts keep getting rejected for some reason.. but I'll try again:

The reason I didn't do it in order was because I didn't have my 1098 yet, but wanted to stat working on my taxes.

I have now deleted my 1098 in the deductions section and gone back to the income/rental section.

"If while working through the rental section you elect to have the program do the splits for you, then it will for "most" things but not all. It "will" split the mortgage interest if you elect that option, and then enter the 1098 exactly as printed."

When going through the rental section, it does not give me an option to enter an actual 1098, it just asks for some of the info from the - real estate tax and mortgage interest. Can I add PMI to the "insurance" total? Why doesn't TT ask for any PMI here??

"the small print on one of the screens (dealing with mortgage interest) will tell you something along the lines of "we already have $xxx for mortgage interest" and the amount shown will be what is *NOT* allocated to the rental portion."

When I move to the Deductions section, it shows the correct (split) amounts for Mortgage Interest and Property Taxes. But when I go into edit/add under Mortgage Interest to put in my bank's name, it asks me to fill in boxes as they appear on my 1098. Nothing about already having mortgage interest and there are absolutely no numbers populated. All blanks asking what's on my 1098.

If I skip entering any 1098 info (doesn't seem right) it flags the fact that I haven't answered questions for amount qualifying mortgage interest. Probably because I didn't enter box 2 of the 1098 anywhere.

Your posts are not being rejected. The problem is, ever since they migrated the help forums to this "new and improved" platform, they haven't yet worked all the bugs out yet. This is the third or forth migration these forums have gone through in the 10 plus years I've been participating, and it seems to me that every "improvement" is step backwards. 🙂

Ummmmm, the only possible place to get that data is from the 1098. So that screen "is" asking for the 1098 data.  See image below. Circled in green.

Can I add PMI to the "insurance" total?

Yes.

Why doesn't TT ask for any PMI here??

It does. See image below. (circled in red)

Are you being asked to enter the lender's name when runing a "review check for errors" thing? If so, that's because you are selecting the "Enter a new 1098" button, when you should be clicking the "EDIT" button to the right of the entry that is already there.  Enter the lenders name and then CONTINUE working it through to the end of that section. Do not change any of the numbers. Just keep clicking CONTINUE until it's done and you are returned to the "Home Loan Deduction Summary" screen. There should only be "ONE" mortgage lender entry on this screen. Then click the DONE button on that screen to leave that section.

Ahh, thanks for being patient with me and this system, sorry for all the double posts.

Thanks, definitely missed that one. Was expecting it on the insurance page, not the interest page.

So when I go to deductions this is what I see. The Edit/Add button are the same. After entering in the bank name, all fields are blank for there in.

@Carl am I missing something obvious?

Just a guess based on my own logic (which is sometimes illogical).

More than likely when you entered the 1098 information in the SCH E section, you were asked for the mortgage interest from the 1098, and "ONLY" the mortgage interest.

Then the problem on the error check is that the other boxes on the 1098 are not entered on the personal side in the "your Home" section.

If I'm right, then you need to EDIT (Not add another 1098) the split entry in the "Your Home" section (under deductions & credits) and enter the other amounts from the 1098 from boxes 2 and 3, as well as indicating if either box 7 is checked, or if there's an address in box 8. I would fully expect you to have box 7 checked and no address in box 8. But I could be backwards. It will be one or the other.

If you paid mortgage insurance that amount would be in box 5. Otherwise box 5 is blank.

If you paid any points in 2019, then you'll have that amount in box 6. Otherwise box 6 will be blank.

As I showed above, the "edit/add" button is the same, they aren't separate. I don't see a way to edit it, it automatically is trying to make a new one.

Are you trying to enter these claiming an itemized deduction for a personal residence and also claiming it again as a rental expense? This may be a possible reason.

I finally gave up and completely started over. This fixed my issued and seemed to understand that I did not need to complete the 1098 info in the deductions section... what a waste of time turbo tax.
