Total income is about $167,000 and have rental property, owe about $7,000 not seem right. is it because our income is over 165,000 that we are in a different tax bracket?

I have two rental properties and my main home, 3 kids in college.....just does not seem right that with the expenses of the rentals that what I owe keeps going up, if I take the expeses out, what I owe seems to go down....
