Do you have a TurboTax Online account?

We'll help you get started or pick up where you left off.

For reserve duty last year I traveled by air and rent a car to get to the base. I will fly from Boston To Richmond VA then drive a rental to Hampton VA. How to claim it?

Turbo tax doesn't let me claim the reserve duty expenses even though IRS website says I can claim it. But there's no option to claim flights and rental to access the base. I live in the Boston area and I would buy a plane ticket to get to Richmond VA where I rent a car and drive to Hampton VA where the base is located. As a reservist I need to cover all those expenses but there's no option to enter them on Turbo Tax. So how can I claim those expenses ? The IRS website says I can but Turbo tax doesn't provide the option to claim them.

Those expenses are entered on Form 2106.  Use the following steps to get started:

  • On the top row of the TurboTax online screen, click on Search (or for CD/downloaded TurboTax locate the search box in the upper right corner)
  • This opens a box where you can type in “2106” (be sure to enter exactly as shown here) and click the magnifying glass (or for CD/downloaded TurboTax, click Find)
  • The search results will give you an option to “Jump to 2106
  • Click on the blue “Jump to 2106” link
