Can I claim anything for an adult daughter living with me, who is returning to school?

My adult daughter will be going to school (university) this fall. While she attends school, she will be living with me. She will be working at a job that will likely only be for 2-4 hours, 2 days a week, at minimum wage. I will be paying for all her living expenses, rent (I rent my home and am the only parent in the house) food and likely some or all of her bills. Will I be able to claim her as a dependent? What aid (if any) can I claim? Any and all suggestions and options that I may have, will be most appreciated.

Hello, and thank you for your reply. Sorry that I didn't provide more information.

You did provide the answers in your reply. since she is 38 this year and does earn more than $5050. So, that answers my question - nothing can be claimed, since she doesn't meet the criteria.

Thanks again for your quick reply.

Are you asking this for tax year 2024?   Or for tax year 2025?    You have not mentioned the age of your adult daughter.   Is she older than 23?   Will she earn or have income of more than $5050 in 2024?  If she is older than 23 and has more than $5050 of income then you cannot claim her as a dependent.  We need more information.

Meanwhile, here is the criteria for claiming a qualified child or a qualified relative as a dependent for 2024:

WHO CAN I CLAIM AS A DEPENDENT?

You can claim a child, relative, friend, or fiancé (etc.) as a dependent on your 2024 taxes as long as they meet the following requirements:

Qualifying child

  • They're related to you.
  • They aren't claimed as a dependent by someone else.
  • They're a U.S. citizen, resident alien, national, or a Canadian or Mexican resident.
  • They aren’t filing a joint return with their spouse.
  • They're under the age of 19 (or 24 for full-time students).
    • No age limit for permanently and totally disabled children.
  • They lived with you for more than half the year (exceptions apply).
  • They didn't provide more than half of their own support for the year.

Qualifying relative

  • They don't have to be related to you (despite the name).
  • They aren't claimed as a dependent by someone else.
  • They're a U.S. citizen, resident alien, national, or a Canadian or Mexican resident.
  • They aren’t filing a joint return with their spouse.
  • They lived with you the entire year (exceptions apply).
  • They made less than $5050 for 2024.
  • You provided more than half of their financial support.

When you add someone as a dependent, we'll ask a series of questions to make sure you can claim them. There may be other tax benefits you can get when you claim a dependent.
