Good day to you all. My situation is as follows. I live in New York State. I was evicted from my home in 2023 due to a fire caused by my upstairs neighbor. Some of my items were destroyed as a result and I no longer live in that apartment as well. I am ignorant to taxes so Im unsure as to what if any deductions I am entitled to, alongside what proof I might need to provide when filing my taxes this year. I'll also add that I didnt have any Renters Insurance. Can anyone provide guidance as to what forms I might fill, or point me in a direction where I can learn more. Again, in regards to taxes I am below a layman.

No, your apartment fire does not qualify for a tax deduction.
For tax years 2018 through 2025, if you are an individual, casualty or theft losses of personal-use property are deductible only if the loss is attributable to a federally declared disaster.
You may deduct casualty and theft losses relating to your home, household items, and vehicles on your federal income tax return if the loss is caused by a federally declared disaster declared by the President.
I dont believe my incident qualifies as a federally declared disaster. It was just an apartment fire caused by my neighbors upstairs. It caused them, myself, and the tenants under my apartment to be ejected from our harms, alongside some property damage. Are you aware if anything qualifies in my situation?
