1099NEC

This year I got a 1099NEC instead of a 1099MISC to report my rental income from the management company. Is this correct? It does not seem so to me. If it is correct where do I report the income?

The issuer was wrong. The 1099-NEC is for earned income only, not passive income.

Just disregard the 1099-NEC entirely and enter your rental income "as if" no form of any type was issued. You'll be fine. When e-filing your tax return all that is reported is the income. That's it. The fact that it was reported to you on any form is "not" a part of your e-filed tax return.  So you'll be fine.

I don't agree with @Carl.

You need to contact the management company and have them send you a new 1099-NEC that has the "corrected" box marked at the top and zero income and issue you a form 1099-MISC.

If you don't do this you will most likely receive a matching notice from the IRS and then that will begin a letter writing campaign that will take months to address, if not longer.  In addition, they may also tell you that to correct this it will require the correct form to be issued.

The IRS isn't just going to make a change to their system just because you tell them to do so.  The taxpayer always has the initial burden of proof.

Three golden rules when dealing with the IRS.

1) You are guilty until proven innocent.

2) The burden of proof is on the accused (that's you !) and not the accuser.

3) If it's not it writing, then it did not occur.
