Self Employed HSA contribution

My wife contributes to her employer HSA and we have medical coverage through her employer. I'm self employed can I open up my own HSA and contribute to my own plan even though my medical coverage is through my wife.

Yes, if your wife's HSA is classified as an individual HSA and not a family HSA to cover you then you can open your own HSA as an individual and contribute to it.

Her plan is a family plan that covers me. If that is the case I can contribute to my own?

Yes, but now it gets tricky. You can have an individual HSA and contribute to it while she contributes to the family HSA. But the combined contributions for both HSAs can't exceed the family contribution maximum ($8,750 in 2026). That contribution limit is per family not per account. So if her employer is maxing out her HSA then you can't contribute to another one.
