Why is Turbo Tax generating Schedule 8812 when we have no children or other dependents? I can't find a way to indicate that it does not apply.

I have no child dependents either and found that I could finally get rid of the error by entering zeros in the form and saving it.

Click on Tax Tools on the left side of the online program screen

Click on Tools

Click on Delete a form

Delete Schedule 8812

I can delete the form, but when I run smart check the program puts it back and requires an answer. One question I found says that it will show up when one child has an ITIN. This is a joint return with no dependents, although the spouse has an ITIN. Is the program reacting to this in error?

You should be filing a Joint tax return with your spouse and DO NOT enter them as a dependent. If you have not entered anyone as a dependent on your tax return and the program still asks about the schedule 8812 you should clear and start over.

If you have not paid for the online edition you are using, have not filed your tax return or registered the Free edition, then you can clear your return and start over. Click on Tax Tools on the left side of the program screen while working on the 2021 online tax return. Click on Clear & Start Over.

No kids. No dependents, and Sch 8812 throws an error on the federal error check.

Why is this still a problem?

To get rid of the error I went into the Deductions Credit section and completed the forms for the Child care credit and the child tax credit. Ended up with 0 being shown. But this eliminated the error.

Everyone is being asked this question since TurboTax does not know if the user was one who received these advances from the IRS in 2021.

Enter a 0 (zero) when asked to enter a number on the Schedule 8812. This will correct the issue and remove the Schedule 8812 from your tax return so that you can file the return.

Every person filing a tax return for 2021 is required to complete this form whether they have a dependent or not.

This is to confirm that you did not receive any Advance Child Tax Credit

In the Federal section of your return, go to Deductions & Credits
Scroll down to You and Your Family and click Revisit/Start next to Advance payments, Child and Other Dependent Tax Credits
Click Continue
Answer Let's start with where you spent the most time in 2021.
Answer No to Did you receive any advance Child Tax Credit payments in 2021?

I tried all the suggestions listed, deleting 8812, removing my adult son , changing my status to single, saving each time.. and still it would bring back 8812 and not let me efile. Seems like a lot of people are having this problem

Go through the questions. If you did not receive advance payments, enter 0 for the amount you received and the number of children you received payment for. Go back and fix your filing status and add your dependents if you are qualified to claim them though. Everyone has to answer those questions, whether or not you received any advance Child Tax Credit payments.

Hi DawnC

I entered 0 for all the fields and still no luck. I am stuck in an internal loop.

At this point I am ready to give up and file by mail , since Turbo Tax will not let me proceed. However it has already charged my credit card $25 for the State filing fee, even though I have not and cannot file through TurboTax

I believe there is a bug in the system, seems like a lot of other people are having the same problem.

Because TurboTax does not care. Even after chatting with customer support on the phone for 1/2 hour, problem not solved. I finally just entered 0 for the amount and submitted it including 8812. This form should not have been required but it was if I wanted to e-file or finish my return using TurboTax.
