Refund amount changed after software update

Back in April I filed an extension on my taxes waiting for a final form to be ready. I filed the extension on April 14th so all tax forms should have long since been finalized. I finally received my last form today (mid July) and opened TurboTax on my PC. As always it downloaded updates but didn’t tell me what the software update changed. After this update, but without me changing anything, my refund amount is now $1,500 less than it was when I filed for the extension. I don’t have a PDF of the old version because I didn’t file at that time and I only save/print a PDF of my completed return.

How can I figure out what was changed? There is no way the tax calculations could have been updated in the time since I filed for the extension because I filed when Federal taxes were already due. How can I find what the software updates actually did, the history just say “Program Updates released 7/9/2026.”

Was this “final form” a tax reporting statement (e.g., 1099 variant, K-1) that you entered into the program recently?

I was waiting on a K-1 but I haven’t entered it yet. When I filed the extension I was amused that the refund amount was very close to a round number so it stuck in my head and I took a screenshot of it. When I opened TurboTax today it did the software update but I didn’t enter any new information. I noticed the refund number in the box at the top was different. I went back to my screenshot to double check that I wasn’t mis-remembering somehow. It decreased by almost $1,500 without me entering any new information. I’ve been waiting to enter the new K-1 because I don’t want to change anything in the hopes that somebody has a suggestion to track down the discrepancy first.

Duplicate due to board software error.

Well if it’s not too much work I would start a new test return, go up to File >New (you can transfer from 2024 again) and enter everything from scratch and see if it matches what you remember.   Do you get Social Security?   Maybe they updated that part.   People were not getting a taxable amount of SS on 1040 line 6b.    Another thing is to compare 2025 with 2024 line by line.   Maybe something will stand out.  I filed in Feb and it’s still the same.

I do not get Social Security yet. I’m considering this as an option but my return includes multiple K-1 forms with foreign income that are a royal pain to enter so I’m treating it as a last resort! I’m afraid without a reference PDF or something though it might be my only option.

do your foreign tax credits exceed $300 ($600 fiing joint)? if yes…...

review form 1116.   I recall posts earlier this tax season bout that form not operating correctly and folks manally adjusting that form.  I think it was in the line 3 area (which has multiple sub-parts).

maybe that has been updated / fixed/ overridden?
