I have the same problem. My federal return gets rejected because it is missing the IP PIN, but I don't have one.

I have a 5 digit pin. It says it needs a six digit pin. Can I electronically file without the 6 digit ip pin?

If you were not issued a 6 digit IP_PIN, you can file without one. The question is were you issued an IP-PIN? Generally, the IRS will send you an IP-PIN, or Identity Protection PIN, if you have had an identity theft issue. They will send you a letter, CP01A, which tells you you have an IP-PIN and explains how to use it.

If you do not believe you have an IP-PIN then leave the IP-PIN space blank. IP_PINs are all 6 digits, there is no 5 digit IP_PINS.

If you need to recover your IP-PIN, you can see this link. For more information about IP-PINS, see this link.
