Installing TT 2025 on Mac with error code -36

The Finder can’t complete the operation because some data in “TurboTax 2025.app” can’t be read or written.
(Error code -36)

I purchased the app online and downloaded the dmg directly from https://shop.app.intuit.com/unified/downloads?route=myaccounts&cgcview=downloads

I rebooted and downloaded the app multiple times with no success.

TurboTax Desktop 2025 is still Intel‑only code. On Apple Silicon Macs, it runs via Rosetta 2 translation. Rosetta 2 is still available under macOS Tahoe 26, so Intel‑built TurboTax will work on M‑series Macs, though performance may vary slightly depending on your hardware.

this is what I found on the web. hope it helps. as a last resort contact TurboTax support

Step-by-step fixes

1. Verify prerequisites

  • Ensure your Mac meets TurboTax 2025’s minimum system requirements

  • Confirm you have administrator rights: Apple menu → System Settings → Users & Groups → your account → “Allow user to administer this computer” must be checked.

  • Turn off file sharing (Apple menu → System Settings → General → Sharing → uncheck all)

2. Remove corrupted installer files

  • Empty the Trash.

  • Quit TurboTax and remove any old versions from Applications and ~/Library/Application Support/TurboTax.

  • Delete any .DS_Store files in the TurboTax app bundle and its cache folders.

3. Reinstall cleanly

  • Close all apps, then restart your Mac.

  • Open the .dmg file, drag the .app into Applications, and right‑click → Open if Apple Security blocks it.

  • If you get the “can’t be opened” block, choose Open again in the second prompt

4. Fix Finder error -36 directly

If the installer still fails with -36:

  • Locate the file in the installer that’s causing the error (Finder will name it with a leading . and trailing _).

  • Right‑click → Get Info → ensure Read & Write is allowed for your user

  • If the file is corrupted, delete it and let the installer recreate it.

  • For persistent issues, use a Mac optimization tool lto clear junk and fix Finder issues

5. Network and security checks

  • Use a wired broadband connection during install

  • Temporarily disable firewall/antivirus during install, then re‑enable afterward .
