Under what circumstances would it be appropriate to file an extension?

    As long as you pay a fair estimate of the taxes due on your return as of the date of the extension, any reason is acceptable for requesting an extension of time to file. The request must be filed on or before the original filing date of the return. In the case of Form 1040 for tax year 2023 return, that date was April 15, 2024.
