Doing prep for 2026. Changing Depreciation method

Hi,

I am a lifetime turbotax user. And prefer to use it for 2026 again if possible.

I am in the midst of changing depreciation method for 2026. I am wondering about what I am in for. I realize I will need 3115 and maybe some support documentation, but am unclear on how to go about that for next years taxes. Will it be fairly straightforward? Should I consider doing a 1 off and having an accountant do my taxes for 2026 only? Will this lead to filing by mail instead (which I am 100% with). Just trying to prepare mentally if this depreciation change is going to be a filing nightmare.

Thanks in advance!

Were you using an incorrect method of accounting for depreciation and, if so, have you been reporting it for two or more consecutive tax years?

Not incorrect. But different depreciation for 2 or more years. 27.5 in prior years.

TurboTax can handle your scenario, but you will have to use Forms Mode for the 3115. The online versions of TurboTax do not have Forms Mode.

I was using 27.5 in prior years, but am doing a cost seg study for 2026  and changing to that method going forward. I use desktop version so am not concerned with online version.

Understood. You can accomplish that with a desktop version but you’re going to have to work in Forms Mode, regardless. You can give it a shot by yourself first and then upgrade, if it’s too overwhelming, to an “assist” set up (where an Expert can sort of guide you through the process).
