Amended 2024 Return

I had amended my 2024 return in April 2026 to include a few missing 1099 forms and was able to e-file the amended return using TurboTax Online. I got an update that there was some missing information regarding some 1099-B transactions in July. I had tried updating the information in the online version, but it wasn’t working correctly and I was advised to use the Desktop version.

I completed adding the information using the Desktop version of TurboTax and am trying to file, no additional taxes due beyond what I paid in April of this year, but it doesn’t like the signature date of 08/25/2026, saying that the signature needs to be between 01/01/2025 and 12/31/2025. Any idea what to do here?

Thanks.

You cannot e-file a 2024 prior-year amended return past the e-file seasonal cutoffs or validation limits, meaning you must print, sign, and mail your Form 1040-X.

Why This Happens

  • E-File Closures: The IRS and software systems close electronic filing for prior tax years once the current filing cycle advances, blocking current-year signature dates (like August 2026) for older returns.
  • Software Limitation: TurboTax Desktop locks signature validation windows to the specific tax year parameters, creating a hard-coded software block that prevents electronic transmission.

What You Should Do

  • Switch to Print Mode: Navigate through your TurboTax Desktop print center to generate a hard copy of Form 1040-X along with any updated schedules (such as Form 8949 or Schedule D for your 1099-B data).
  • Sign and Date Manually: Sign and date the paper Form 1040-X by hand using the actual current date in ink.
  • Mail the Return: Mail the physical documents to the appropriate IRS address listed in your TurboTax instructions or on the IRS Form 1040-X Instructions Page. Use a trackable mailing method like certified mail so you have proof of delivery.
